What is Islam?

Objectives:

1. Identify Islam as a religion, explain its main principles and analyse its influence on the daily life of the Muslim population.
2. Recognise Islam as a great empire and locate it geographically and historically.
3. Analyse the Islamic forms of government.
4. Describe and explain the Islamic ways of life.
5. Analyse the political, economic and cultural characteristics of Al Andalus and analuse the influence of Islamic civilization on the Iberian Penisula.


1. Create your own crossword puzzle with the following definitions, terms and places:

Muslim, Islam, Iberian Penisula, Al Andalus, Mecca, Kufic Script, Caliph, Mohammad, Mozarabs, Mosque, Pilgrim, Koran, Allah, Hegira, Prophet, Holy War, Damascus, Bagdad, Cairo, Córdova, Berbers, Astrolabe, Souk, Alcanzar, Nomads.

2. Why is Islam said to have developed a great civilization?
3. Compare a Byzantine City (Constantinople) and the Islamic City (Damascus) -  (Page 139 and 155)

Students read, analyze and answer the questions from Unit 10. As a reflection they place their own examples (pictures, videos, links) on their blogs and finally making an interactive quiz online.

5. Watch the video about Islam and create a question bank. 
   (we already watched some part of it in class)
